CHAPTER THIRTEEN

“I mean – it all turned out fine, so I guess I can’t complain…” Heather started.

She turned away from the one-way mirror of the interrogation room to give Megan a look of sincere concern.

“But how did you know that the saw wouldn’t cut off your fingers?” she asked. “Like, I would never have even considered… let alone dared…”

Megan shrugged.

"Woodworking's a pretty common hobby around here. I recognized the logo on the side – I know how those saw-stops work. And the foreman had been stressing how much he valued safety. But it doesn't really matter either way. I'm willing to risk more than just a few fingers if it means we catch this killer before he hurts anyone else."

Heather shook her head in disbelief.

“Well… I don’t know. Like I said, it got the job done. You really play hardball, huh. I gotta respect that.”

"I could say the same for you. You were quick on the draw with the taser back there. Who knows how far he was gonna take it," she said, gesturing to where Ryan sat handcuffed to the table, across the one-way mirror. "Might've saved me a black eye, or worse. I owe you one."

Heather nodded appreciatively, then regarded Ryan again through the glass

“Well. You know what you wanna ask him, I’m sure,” she said. “I think we’ve let him stew for long enough.”

“You betcha,” Megan said. “Just be prepared to be a bad cop to my bad cop, okay? This guy seems like he only responds to one type of approach.”

Megan opened the door to the interrogation room, stepping in with a practiced scowl. She sat down silently in one of the chairs across from Ryan. Heather opted to remain standing, planting both palms on the table and leaning over menacingly.

She stared coldly at Ryan for one last long moment. For his part, his expression was unreadable. She then opened the file folder she’d brought along, selecting a photo taken of the victim’s corpse at the first crime scene.

“Markus Pettarson,” she said simply, sliding the picture over toward his side of the table.

She let him marinate on that for a few seconds, then produced a second photograph - the second victim at the second crime scene.

“John Doe.”

“Why are you showing me this?” Ryan said.

Megan didn’t answer. She only continued staring at him, leaning back casually in her chair.

"So… aggravated assault of an officer. We have you on that, no problem. That's a violent felony – we're talking years here. Not months. Which means we have all the time in the world to talk it out about these two," she said, tapping the pictures.

“What are you talking about? What are you saying?” he asked – and Megan almost thought she heard his voice quaver. Was he trying to switch up his strategy – go for a sympathy angle?

“You tell me, bud,” she said. “How ‘bout we start with a few questions… I’m of the understanding you were working as a toll booth collector in one of your last jobs.
